Mayhem In The Midlands Conference Canceled

This morning, I received the disappointing news that the annual Mayhem In The Midlands conference held in Omaha, Nebraska, is being canceled this year:
It is with deep regret that the Committee of the 2011 Mayhem in the Midlands Crime Fiction Conference announces that the event has been cancelled.
This has been a very difficult decision, since the conference has a long and happy history. We wish to thank all of the authors who have served on panels, signed books, donated items to the auction and so much more for so many years. We are grateful to all the readers who have come to meet and talk with their favorite authors. We thank you all for your support throughout the years.
Registration refunds will be processed in the next two weeks. If you have made your hotel reservations, please cancel those directly with the hotel at 402-346-9000.
Again, we appreciate the support that so many of you have shown in previous years.

Mayhem was one of my favorite conferences, if not my most. It had nothing to do with the fact that I set the majority of my fiction in Nebraska. It had everything to do with the limited number of registrants, the quality of the panels and the chance to spend meaningful time with readers and writers in a mellower setting. This is sad news. This is bad news. The website says to check back in 2012. I sure will.

Anthony, I got the same email. Any idea WHY it's canceled? I wish they'd said more in the email.
I love it, too. when I googled Mayhem in the Midlands Canceled your blog came up
I have no more information. It's a popular, awesome conference. I don't know what happened behind the lines. Real shame.
